Amazon puts a nearly 500-market target on Prime Air's next phase
Amazon plans to expand Prime Air from 11 current delivery sites to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, according to reporting by the Associated Press. The company says that footprint could place drone delivery within reach of about 30 million customers, with launches planned around Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Boise among other markets. Prime Air's current service centers on eligible packages weighing no more than five pounds and targets delivery in roughly 30 minutes.
The number is a plan, not a statement that every proposed site has cleared its regulatory, property, and community work. The practical test will be whether Amazon can turn a limited-site program into a repeatable operating model across hundreds of distinct neighborhoods without treating local approvals, noise concerns, and launch-site constraints as afterthoughts.
Honeywell tests a BVLOS link that can change networks in flight
Honeywell Aerospace's Czech team tested a lightweight satellite antenna and its VersaWave communications system during a BVLOS demonstration at Budkovice Airport. The setup used Viasat's satellite network alongside terrestrial connectivity, with the aircraft able to switch between links. The demonstration also connected with Frequentis UTM services and a ground-based detect-and-avoid system in the Czech U-space environment.
During the exercise, an operator-approved route adjustment was passed to the aircraft and executed automatically. That combination matters: resilient command-and-control is not only about keeping a connection alive, but also about ensuring that approved changes can move cleanly through the traffic-management and flight-control chain. Honeywell says it is preparing the equipment for industrial production and expects Czech suppliers to participate.
Australia's farm-drone opportunity runs into a people-and-economics constraint
Australia has the open terrain and regulatory interest needed for larger-scale BVLOS agricultural operations, but DJI Agriculture says operator availability, difficult terrain, and business economics remain significant barriers. In an interview with AgNavigator, the company pointed to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's trial methodology initiative as a potentially useful way to reduce repetitive approval work for proven operating patterns.
That is a vendor's assessment, but the underlying constraint is familiar across enterprise drone programs: an approval pathway does not create trained crews, local maintenance coverage, or profitable route density by itself. Agricultural operators considering BVLOS should model the entire service network—including travel, battery logistics, seasonal demand, and support—before assuming that greater permitted range automatically produces lower unit costs.
India adds mobile counter-UAS vehicles for border and urban protection
India's Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered mobile Ranger counter-UAS patrol vehicles from Indrajaal-Sigma for border and urban security operations. The reported procurement includes a ₹145 crore border-security order and an urban-policing order valued at about ₹10 crore. The urban systems are intended for public events, critical infrastructure, and protection operations involving senior officials.
Although counter-UAS procurement often sits near the defense market, this order has a direct civil-operations connection. Mobile detection, tracking, and response units will increasingly share airspace with public-safety and commercial aircraft. Agencies and approved operators need clear identification, notification, and deconfliction procedures so that protective systems can distinguish authorized missions from genuine threats.

CASA advances a risk-based proposal for operations over and near people
Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority is refining proposed changes that could let some drone operations over or near people proceed without an individual CASA application. The lower-risk concepts include operations with aircraft weighing 250 grams or less and operations in which a suitable barrier or structure separates the aircraft from people. Higher-risk cases would still require stronger concepts of operations, emergency planning, and an approval pathway.
CASA received 185 consultation responses. Most respondents supported the microdrone concept outright or with changes, but the agency has not finalized the rules or implementation dates. CASA says it will refine the policy, consult on supporting guidance, and provide advance notice of transition arrangements. Operators should therefore treat the paper as policy direction—not current operating authority.

Honolulu Police Department starts a defined DFR pilot
The Honolulu Police Department launched its first Drone as First Responder pilot earlier this month in partnership with the Hawai‘i Department of Law Enforcement. The program is intended to test how remotely deployed aircraft can support emergency response and public-safety decision-making before the department considers any broader use.
Lesson: A DFR launch should begin with a defined geography, documented mission types, governance rules, evidence-handling procedures, and measurable response outcomes. That makes the expansion decision auditable rather than anecdotal—and gives community stakeholders something concrete to evaluate.
